Read the story

Far away in the East lived some wise men who studied the night sky. They knew the stars the way a shepherd knows his sheep. One night they saw a new star, bright and different from all the others.

“This star means a new king has been born,” they said. “A king for the Jewish people. We must go and worship Him.”

So they packed their camels with food, water and precious gifts, and they set out on a very long journey. They travelled over deserts and mountains, through towns and across rivers, for many, many days.

At last they came to Jerusalem, the great city. “Where is the child who has been born King of the Jews?” they asked. “We saw His star and have come to worship Him.”

When King Herod heard this, he was upset. He did not want any other king. He called the wise men to a secret meeting. “Go to Bethlehem and look for the child,” he told them. “When you find Him, come back and tell me, so that I can go and worship Him too.” But Herod was not telling the truth.

The wise men set off again. And there, ahead of them in the sky, was the star! It moved before them until it stopped over the place where the child was.

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.”

Matthew 2:10

They went into the house and saw the young child Jesus with His mother, Mary. These important, learned men knelt down on the floor and worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasures and gave Him gifts: shining gold, sweet smelling frankincense, and precious myrrh.

That night God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they went home another way, their hearts full of joy.

The wise men travelled a long way to find Jesus, and when they found Him, they gave Him their very best.

What we learn

Jesus is worth searching for, and when we find Him, we can give Him our very best, our love, our praise and our hearts.

Family prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You that anyone who looks for You can find You. Help us to follow You every day and to give You the very best we have. Amen.

A verse to remember

We saw his star, and have come to worship him.

Matthew 2:2

Say it together a few times, then see who can say it alone.

Talk about it together

  • How did the wise men know where to go?
  • What gifts did they bring to Jesus?
  • What is something you could give to Jesus? (It does not have to be a thing you can hold.)

Read it in the Bible: Matthew 2:1–12.
