Read the story
In a little town called Nazareth there lived a young woman named Mary. She was kind and she loved God. She was going to marry a carpenter named Joseph, and her days were full of ordinary things: fetching water, baking bread, helping her family.
One day, while Mary was at home, the room filled with light. An angel stood in front of her. His name was Gabriel, and God had sent him with a message.
“Greetings, Mary!” said the angel. “The Lord is with you.”
Mary was frightened. She did not understand what this could mean. But Gabriel spoke gently. “Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you. You are going to have a baby boy, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great, and He will be called the Son of God. His kingdom will never end.”
Mary’s heart was racing. “How can this happen?” she asked. “I am not married yet.”
“The Holy Spirit will come to you,” Gabriel answered, “and the baby will be holy, God’s own Son. And your cousin Elizabeth, who everyone said was too old to have children, is going to have a baby too.”
Then the angel said something Mary would remember for the rest of her life:
“For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”
Luke 1:37
Mary was quiet for a moment. She could not see how everything would work out. She did not know what Joseph would say, or what the people in Nazareth would think. But she knew God, and she trusted Him.
“I am the Lord’s servant,” she said. “Let it happen to me just as you have said.”
And the angel left her.
That was how the very first Christmas began, not with lights or presents, but with a young woman in a small town who said yes to God.
What we learn
Nothing is impossible for God, and we can trust Him and say yes to His plans, even when we do not understand everything.
Family prayer
Dear God, thank You that nothing is impossible for You. Help us to trust You like Mary did, and to say yes when You ask us to follow You. Amen.
A verse to remember
Nothing is impossible with God.
Luke 1:37
Say it together a few times, then see who can say it alone.
Talk about it together
- What news did the angel Gabriel bring to Mary?
- Mary was afraid at first. What helped her say yes?
- Is there something hard you can trust God with today?
Read it in the Bible: Luke 1:26–38.
